Taxonomic Comments
Molecular and morphological data of sand lances found in the North Pacific Ocean and adjacent seas confirm the presence of four species of Ammodytes in the North Pacific, with two occurring in North American waters, A. hexapterus and A. personatus (Orr et al. 2015). The authors also designated neotypes for both species and proposed the common name Arctic Sand Lance for A. hexapterus and Pacific Sand Lance for A. personatus to more accurately reflect the species' distributions.
