Taxonomic Comments
This is a narrow treatment of Elymus virginicus, excluding var. submuticus and var. jenkinsii, (recognized as varieties of E. virginicus in Kartesz (1994)) which are included in the distinct species E. submuticus as in Kartesz (1999) and included in Elymus curvatus Piper by Barkworth et al. in FNA (2007, vol. 24). However, this treatment of E. virginicus includes E. glabriflorus which the FNA (2007) treatment and Weakley et al. (2024) exclude as distinct. Weakley et al. (2024) recognize E. virginicus even more narrowly, excluding E. halophilus, E. jejunus, and E. hirsutiglumis which were included as E. virginicus var. halophilus, var. jejunus, and var. intermedius (respectively) in FNA (2007). E. virginicus var. jejunus and intermedius were considered indistinct from typical E. virginicus in Kartesz (1999).
